Head Trauma Lecture, June 9th

I have recently been asked to give another lecture at Palomar Hospital in Escondido,on Traumatic Brain Injury. The request was by the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation and instead of doctors, nurses, physical and occupational therapists, it will be for survivors of brain injury and their family. It is a real shame that so many unfortunate people that have something this terrible happen to them are not aware that there are treatments available to make their lives more normal again.

Damage to the visual system can cause blurred vision, double vision, loss of balance, reading difficulties, comprehension difficulties, loss of side vision , memory problems and sensitivity to lights just to name a few of the symptoms. Optometrists trained in Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation are the only eye care providers trained to handle this problem. Most patients see their neurologist who will refer them to an ophthalmologist who will not know how to treat them. So these patients never get the help that is available. This means that their activities of daily living will be greatly reduced.

Last month I finished my treatment of a patient who had a stroke over a year ago and was never treated by his ophthalmologist. He had not been able to read for over one year. This is something that should never happen.

Any one who is interested can attend the lecture. You can reach the San Diego Brain Injury Foundation by visting their website at http://www.sdbif.org/ or calling (619) 294-6541.It is scheduled for June 9th at 10:00 am to 12:00 pm.at Palomar Hospital.
