Autism and Vision

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its estimate of autism prevalence in the United States to 1 in 88 children. (1 in 54 boys and 1 in 252 girls.)

Vision (not eyesight) is an important part of the problems associated with autism. This is overlooked in most children with autism. This missing part of the puzzle should be the dominant sense and it is not, in many children with autism. Vision can either lead or interfere with one's ability to function normally.

Developmental Optometrists are the only eye care providers that are trained to evaluate and treat these challenging visual problems in children with autism. This is not an “eye exam.” Problems like toe walking can be overcome with special developmental optometric treatment. Lack of eye contact can also be minimized with developmental optometric treatment.

All children with autism should be evaluated by a Developmental Optometrist.
